Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Clermont Ferrand and its surroundings

Clermont-Ferrand is the capital of Auvergne and as such is a cultural and industrial epicentre. The city has a rich history, it was established in 1630 when the Edict of Troyes forced the cities of Clermont and Montferrand to merge. Despite Montferrand's numerous demands for independence through the centuries, the union has remained but even today both cities have distinctive centres. Some people come to admire the volcaneous backdrop, provided by the scenic Chaîne des Puys that surround the city, but many visit to see the two stunning churches. Notre-Dame du Port is a Romanesque church, which dates back to the 11th and 12th century was dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The fleeting Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Clermont-Ferrand is also worth a visit. After you have finished exploring the city why not relax in one of its lush gardens?

Movie fans will love the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. It's the second biggest after Cannes but unlike its sister event it allows non-professional visitors and as it's one of the most famous film festival in the world you might even spot a few stars. Young and young at heart visitors who are interested in the region's volcanoes should head to The Puy de Dôme volcano and the neighbouring Vulcania theme park. The volcano is just 10km from the Première Classe Hotel Clermont-Ferrand and 17km for the Vulcania.
